ASYR is seeking a candidate to join its dynamic team in the following position:

An experienced and highly motivated individual to work as an Addictions Counsellor 3, for our Umbrellas Program in its satellite office, located in York Region, reporting to the Assigned Supervisor. This is a temporary full-time 12-14 month maternity leave contract position, for 35 hours per week, with two evenings per week, providing services throughout Central LHIN Region. Weekend work is also expected (i.e. some Saturdays). The incumbent will be assigned a direct service caseload in accordance with the agency's guidelines and subject to the evaluation of specific clinical competence and limitation by the Clinical Director. The hourly wage rate is $30.90.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assessing the level, pattern, and dynamics of the alcohol and/or drug use by an individual, couple, or family as well as the client's overall functioning including; social systems, general health, and psycho/social status
  • Evaluating specific aspects of the client's functioning by using tools and processes designed for specialized assessment purposes
  • Developing a treatment plan and selecting appropriate treatment strategies on the basis of information gathered through the assessment processes
  • Providing either written or verbal information regarding the assessment findings and the case formulation to the client and to referral sources that request this information
  • Redirecting individuals whose assessed needs cannot be met on a short-term, outpatient basis to appropriate specialized programs
  • Providing consultation and problem-solving assistance to professional colleagues and members of the community
  • Assisting the client informally to identify problems and goals
  • Developing and implementing a formal, systematic, and ongoing goal setting process
  • Providing skills teaching in selected areas of functioning attendant to rehabilitation for substance abuse through general instruction
  • Supporting and guiding the client in reaching their goals and in solving selected, practical problems
  • Providing systematic interpretation and direction of the client's functioning and situation in order to facilitate the development of specific insights and solutions
  • Providing appropriate clinical intervention and counselling to agency clients
  • Ensuring continuity of service to clients through a continuous process of service matching, co-ordination, outreach to resources frequently used by the client population, referral, and follow-up
  • Acting on behalf of and/or with the client by representing the client's needs as required in order to both accomplish the client's goals and teach self-advocacy skills
  • Working with the client and/or their family system/subsystem to develop or restore the client's natural support system - family, friends, co-workers, church, etc
  • Establishing relationships with other community groups and relevant services that will support the client's functioning
  • Facilitating group casework meetings that are consistent with program services and goals
  • Providing accessible casework services that are tailored to the local community's needs and participating in inter-agency committee work at selected satellite offices
  • Maintaining client records including progress notes, service delivery logs and discharge summaries
  • Educating community agencies and professional groups as assigned by the Clinical Director
  • Participating in in-house peer consultation/supervision and staff training programs

Qualifications

  • A minimum Master?s degree in one of the sciences or a health related discipline, with a considerable knowledge of substance abuse issues.
  • Member or member in progress with one of the regulatory colleges under the Regulated Health Professionals Act ex: College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario; Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of counselling experience with women, women who are parenting young children and/or women who are pregnant
  • Deep understanding of attachment theories and issues
  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of child developmental stages
  • Extensive training and experience working with trauma
  • Thorough understanding of child welfare systems
  • Significant knowledge and experience in varieties of counseling models including systemic intervention models
  • Ability to do addiction assessments independently and provide comprehensive treatment planning and treatment to clients with addiction issues
  • Ability to facilitate psycho educational and process groups to diverse clients with substance use issues
  • Knowledge and experience in harm reduction strategies
  • Proven ability to do presentations to clients, the general public and other service providers
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills
  • The ability to work independently
  • A working knowledge of data management systems (Catalyst preferred)
  • A valid driver?s license and access to an insured vehicle
  • A successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check, as per agency policy and procedures
