Sistema Winnipeg is an inclusive and intensive orchestral program of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) that focuses on children with the fewest resources and greatest need. The program delivers musical training to children after school for three hours a day, five days a week, at no cost to participants. Sistema Winnipeg encourages children to reach their full potential and inspires greater social change within the community.

Position Summary: This role oversees administration of Sistema Winnipeg for the WSO, including human resources, operational and financial management. The position is responsible for further development of a fundraising strategy in support of individual donor activity and grant writing. The position interacts on a regular basis with children and youth, and collaborates with an exciting team of other WSO staff, Sistema teachers and School Division administration. The Sistema Manager must facilitate the social, musical, educational and organizational goals of the program in an efficient and effective manner, in alignment with El Sistema’s ideals of musical excellence and social inclusion.

RESPONSIBILITIES:


Operations and Administration

  • Ensure an operational plan which incorporates the vision and strategic plan of the WSO
  • Deepen operational relationships with school personnel to effectively manage documentation of the registration processes, scheduling, and program evaluation
  • Manage permits, scheduling, and logistics of external events
  • Design program-wide curriculum and oversee broad implementation
  • Create formal artistic partnerships with the WSO and other local organizations that provide musical opportunities for students
  • Maintain an inventory database

Human Resources

  • Oversee a teaching faculty of approximately 20 individuals across two site locations
  • Implement human resources policies, procedures and practices which align with the program ideals of musical excellence and social inclusion
  • Ensure that staff receive an orientation to the organization; responsible for ongoing training and performance evaluation of staff
  • Ensure timely completion of vulnerable sector screenings as required for faculty and volunteers
  • Develop a strategic plan to recruit, train and retain volunteers for the program

Financial Management

  • Prepare short and long term budget forecasts; provide regular financial reporting and analysis
  • Responsible for submitting regular payroll summaries with efficiency and accuracy
  • Work alongside the Development department to assist in individual donor activity and endowment giving
  • Responsible for the management and expansion of all grant applications and foundation proposals associated with the program

Site Coordination

  • Visit each Sistema location weekly in the role of site manager
    • Communicate with and assist teachers as needed
    • Support student engagement, and respond to behavioral issues and/or absences
    • Observe classes to determine students’ progress and how best to support teachers
  • Develop protocol in partnership with school administration for dealing with behavioral issues
  • Develop relationship with students and families; attend school functions to build trust in the community
  • Communicate regularly with Site Coordinators to ensure consistency throughout the program

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary degree in music and/or education, and/or minimum 5 years combined experience in teaching and music performance
  • Experience in arts administration or project management
  • Strong commitment to El Sistema philosophy of social change through music and the mission of Sistema Winnipeg
  • Superior organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, with a willingness to work in close partnership with program stakeholders
  • Experience working with individuals from underserved communities and diverse ethnic backgrounds
  • Experience working with children, individually and in groups, including an understanding of constructive behavior management techniques
  • Successful candidate will be mature, innovative and adventurous, with the ability to work in dynamic environments
  • Additional language is an asset
  • Successful candidate must provide a current copy (less than 6 months) of a Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check.
