For over a decade, our grassroots team has been building schools; equipping 20,000+ students with school supplies annually, investing in teachers by providing them with books, and building a culture of reading for kids. This is all done in collaboration with local staff, volunteers, the ministry of education, municipal governments, community leaders and teachers in Nicaragua. The only way we have been able to grow is through the generous support of our amazing volunteers, board members, staff and partners in Canada and around the world. 

Job Description:

We are looking for a Marketing & Community Outreach Manager who is a passionate story-teller with a heart for education and the communications, social media, and volunteer outreach skills to back it up.

You will be a vital part of our small but mighty team in Canada, reporting to the Executive Director. You will be a champion for SchoolBOX, implementing our annual marketing and communications plan using exemplary written communication skills across a variety of media platforms. Your job is to tell the SchoolBOX story to our national and international community of volunteers, donors, and supporters in order to keep them engaged and active in supporting SchoolBOX’s mission in Nicaragua. You will also manage our international volunteer program. You will facilitate trip registration and pre-departure planning, and provide fundraising support for all of our volunteers travelling to Nicaragua.

We expect you to be of exemplary character, thrive in an independent work environment, and be passionate about the cause of global education. Since you must be able to work cross-culturally with our Nicaraguan team, a command of the Spanish language or a willingness to learn is an asset.

To be successful, you’ll need these qualifications:

  • Marketing: Marketing and public relations experience, preferably with a focus on international development or the charitable sector. Ability to develop and implement a marketing & communications plan including traditional media outreach, social media, and internal and external communication materials. Ability to create exemplary and on-brand written materials including: website news items, e-newsletter content, print newsletters, media releases, brochures, donor impact reports, project proposals & grant applications.
  • Shared Values: Demonstrated commitment to our SchoolBOX mission and shared values.  These include the love of children, belief that education is the key for all children reach to their potential, strength of global community, importance of accountability for every dollar, courage to take managed risks and reach those who need us most, and a mindset for sustainability.
  • Community Outreach: Ability to provide communications and logistical support to local volunteers to raise awareness and funds for SchoolBOX through community events, at-home events, and word-of-mouth. Ability to cultivate new partnerships with donors, businesses and other organizations that generate awareness and revenue for SchoolBOX. Great people skills are essential.
  • Education:  Bachelor degree in marketing, communications, international development or equivalent experience. 
  • Technology: Experience maintaining a strong presence and engaged audience across multiple social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Working knowledge of WordPress, MailChimp, and Adobe InDesign. Proficiency across Microsoft programs including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Graphic design skills an important asset. Working knowledge of Salesforce is an asset, but not a requirement.
  • Language & Culture: Oral and written story-telling skills are critical in English. Experience working in multi-national, cross-cultural, and bi-lingual teams is preferred. Spanish communications.
