On behalf of our client, Agri-Tel Grain Ltd., located in Beausejour, Manitoba, we are seeking a Grain Procurement Manager to join their team. They are a Grain Elevator and Bird Food Processing company involved in processing, packaging, and merchandising of bird feed grains. The Company also manufactures formed bird food products like bird bells, cakes and other formed products. As a diversified company specializing in agricultural commodities since 1978, they are a leader in manufacturing and distributing quality wild bird food products and merchandising grain within North America with an eye on expansion in international markets.

Agri-Tel Grain Ltd. is seeking (a) to centralize the grain procurement function; and (b) to develop high level in-house market intelligence in the grain market in North America. The job responsibilities and the skills needed include the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Vice President
  • Keep regular contact with farmers, elevators and brokers (“suppliers”) for price & market updates
  • Evaluate grain suppliers based on product quality, price, customer service, reputation, location of distribution centers and distribution capacity
  • Liaise closely with the sales and inventory management team for replenishment of stocks
  • Negotiate price and associated terms and procure grain after due approval from the line manager
  • Manage completed contracts with the suppliers
  • Maintain database of all suppliers with acreages, crops grown, inventories, target prices, and any helpful customer information/characteristics
  • Participate in budgeting exercise
  • Establish and maintain relationships directly with suppliers
  • Determine market direction based on industry data and analysis; anticipate supply-demand balance and shifts
  • Develop new business opportunities by predicting future markets, while limiting risk exposure
  • Establish weekly market pricing and review of commodity position statement; develop plans to sell long positions and cover shorts positions
  • Collaborate with Logistics Coordinator and the Operations Manager to ensure smooth and efficient execution of the sales and purchasing process

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in agriculture, business or a related field
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in grain procurement
  • Good knowledge of grains like sunflower seeds, millet, milo, canary, wheat, safflower, corn, peas and oilseeds i.e.
    • Knowledge of supply-demand economics
    • Understanding of seasonal and geographical market characteristics for grains
    • Understanding of transportation costs and trends
    • Knowledge of grain trading policies and current market trends
  • Ability to analyse the market information and disseminate its summary to the management so that decisions could be taken in the best interest of the Company
  • Proven track record of dealing with farmers, elevators and brokers for procuring these grains
  • Knowledge of Inventory Management & Futures Market
  • Ability to:
    • Strategize
    • Relate to needs of agri-business people
    • Negotiate favourable contracts
    • Develop mutual trust and satisfaction with vendors and customers
    • Respect market directions and handle the pressure of market positions
    • Work in a cross-functional team environment
  • Requires solid organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, customer serviceability and analytical skills
  • Some travel is required for meetings with suppliers and industry-related conferences
