Replacing a retiring incumbent, the primary responsibility for the Director, Dam Safety is to ensure safe reservoir retention and passage of water around the 40 dam sites operated by BC Hydro throughout the province. Identifying and prioritizing of all risk associated with operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, initiating appropriate investigation and capital projects, and providing oversight of all projects are key responsibilities in this role. Overseeing a team of dam safety engineers and support staff, the Director, Dam Safety is accountable for all aspects of BC Hydro’s dam safety program and provides expert advice to Executive Management.

This role requires the following experience and qualifications:

  • An Engineering Degree, ideally at the Master’s level, within the Geotechnical, Civil, Structural or Hydro-Technical area.
  • A minimum of 20 years’ experience in the design, construction, analysis and safety of large dams. Prior experience in consulting, government or a Crown Corporation is a strong asset.
  • Depth and breadth of technical knowledge regarding dam safety.
  • Significant experience with risk assessment and management.
  • Superior leadership and communications skills, with the ability to convey complex engineering and dam safety issues to a diverse audience.
  • Self-awareness and critical thinking skills.
