Salary $72,455.73 - $82,891.45 annually, plus 3.3 % Temporary Market Adjustment

The Section Head provides leadership for the daily operations and region-wide delivery of the regional Ecosystems program, including managing staff and financial resources, managing stakeholder relationships, applying legislation, policies and professional standards in a consistent manner, participating in provincial policy development, and overseeing program delivery and projects.  The Section Head builds and maintains effective working relationships with management, natural resource sector partners, clients and external stakeholders, and leads engagement and collaborative initiatives with First Nations on key stewardship issues and may also act as a statutory decision-maker under provincial legislation. 

Resource Management Division’s interdisciplinary mandate bridges policy, operations and research, and is delivered through a combination of program and project management across a range of natural resource fields.  Within Resource Management, the breadth of the regional Ecosystems program that is led by the Section Head includes, but is not limited to, participation and decision support in Environmental Assessment processes for major industrial projects, decision support on transactional, to smaller scale exploration/developments, implementation of government’s objectives related to Species at Risk management and recovery (i.e. boreal and northern caribou), implementation of habitat conservation tools under various legislation, and implementation of monitoring programs.  In addition, regional Ecosystems participates on and/or implements aspects of strategic initiatives including Cumulative Effects programs and New Relationship and Reconciliation Agreements/Government to Government agreements with First Nations.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in biological sciences or related field plus 6 years related experience; or
  • Master of Science degree in biological sciences or related field plus 4 years related experience.
  • Registered (or eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.

Related Experience:

  • Managing a complex natural resource management program under government legislation and policy
  • Interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy
  • Leading staff/ teams( of 2 or more people) on projects or program delivery, preference may be given to 1 year or more of this experience;
  • Supervising and managing the performance of staff, preference may be given to 1 year or more of this experience;
  • Engaging and/or partnering with universities, other agencies, private resource agencies, stakeholders and/or interest groups;
  • Engaging and working with First Nations is preferred.
  • Negotiating agreements with other levels of government or First Nations is preferred.
