The Health Protection Branch in the Ministry of Health safeguards the population from potential health threats by developing legislation and policy for the prevention and reduction of risk of harms from pathogens and contaminants in food, soil, air, and water, environmental contamination and global change. The Branch assesses public health risks and develops policy and strategies to minimize those risks.

In this role, you are the leading provincial authority on the human health risk from land and industrial development. Leading on a variety of team projects, you aid in the development of public health risk management legislation and associated policies, regulations, guidelines and standards related to land and water development. You conduct and develop province wide resource management plans and policies related to public health protection and lead project planning sessions to determine project scope, define deliverables and develop charters. Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders in the natural resource sector, you represent the Ministry at high profile inter-jurisdictional working groups and committees to negotiate agreements. Qualifications for this role include:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. specializing in an area related to human health risk assessment (such as but not limited to public health sciences, epidemiology, exposure assessment, chemical fate and behaviour, natural resource management, environmental management, environmental engineering or toxicology) and a minimum of 2 years of related experience.
  • Consideration may be given for a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline combined with a minimum of 4 years of experience.
  • Preference may be given to those with a Master's or Ph.D. with experience in land or water resource management.

Related experience must include:

  • Developing and/or implementing human health or ecological risk assessment protocols and applying scientific approaches for policy or environmental quality standard development in regulatory settings;
  • Presenting and explaining human health or ecological risk assessment protocols and complex scientific information to peer groups and in other Ministries or in academic forums, in understandable terms in public service and public settings;
  • Negotiating, communicating and building consensus among various government agencies, stakeholder and industry groups on public health risk management policies or similar ‘high profile’ issues.
