Position Overview 

The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position will involve predominantly wet-lab experimental work (molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology and cell biology) culturing cells, microscopy, animal experimentation (mouse) and work with BSL-2 oncolytic viruses.

Work intensity is variable and may on occasion require extended hours into evenings and weekends.  Work in the laboratory environment involves potential exposure to typical risks of standard laboratory equipment and hazardous materials.

This position will report to the Principal Investigator.

Position Description 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Performs laboratory experiments with a high level of technical competence
  • Presents technical information and results to Principal Investigator
  • Performing wet-lab experimental work (basic molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology, etc.) culturing cells, microscopy, and work with BSL-2 oncolytic viruses
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, laboratory experiments and other research for us in scholarly publications when required to
  • Reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment
  • Trains other staff and students in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols
  • Use of various biological samples (eg. tissues, blood, urine, etc)
  • Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completion of a PhD degree
  • Minimum 5 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
  • 1 to 3 years of related technical experience within the research specialty field
  • Expertise in the following areas
  • Oncolytic virus therapy, flow cytometry, animal experimentation, T cell activity assays,  immunofluorescence and immunoblotting,  genetic engineering,  general molecular biology including cloning, general biochemistry and cell biology and in particular methods of analysis for monitoring cell death
  • Demonstrated abilities to work effectively and achieve goals in a laboratory setting
  • Knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Provide semi-skilled to skilled technical procedures to support the research project
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
  • Work with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
