The School of Alberta Ballet’s Professional Division is broken out into Junior (grades 7-9) and Senior School (grades 10-12 and Post Secondary). Both the Director of Junior and Senior School are management positions primary responsible of overseeing the management of the Professional Division for their respective age group at a senior level. The Director of Senior School ensures smooth operations of the Professional Division while supervising other faculty in both classical and contemporary programs.

The Director of Junior/Senior School is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and controlling the development and operations of Professional Division at a senior level. Details of the incumbent’s duties are:

  • Establish objectives for the Professional Division and formulate and approve policies and programs
  • Create, maintain and share school policies and procedures for students and/or faculty
  • Assist in the planning of school budget as pertains to the  Professional Division and the senior school, being budget conscious, ensuring the School of Alberta Ballet is financially sustainable
  • Authorize and organize the establishment of major departments and associated senior staff positions
  • Allocate material, human and financial resources to implement organizational policies and programs
  • Plan, create and implement school curriculum or system of training
  • Represent the organization at international events and competitions, or delegate representatives to act on behalf of the organization
  • Represent and lead the school on the Audition tour
  • Build relationships with other schools and key individuals in the industry
  • Negotiate agreements and foster relationships with key partners and stakeholders
  • Approve and hire necessary faculty
  • Negotiate and allocate scholarships
  • Coordinate the work of directors and departments
  • Manage and communicate with other relevant departments and department heads
  • Maintain appropriate staff/student relationships
  • Participate in professional development/training
  • Lead other faculty in their teaching and lead faculty training sessions
  • Manage and approve all ballet day-to-day operations within the Senior School
  • Management of individual student programming and level placement and communication with academic school for the Senior School
  • Manage parent communications in conjunction with the Artistic and Academic Principal
  • Oversee and decide on student reacceptance within the Senior School
  • Liaise with the School’s Medical Team on student injury and rehabilitation
  • Schedule and manage staff meetings when applicable
  • Participate, as required, in all areas of the School (ballet, administration, residence, academics)
  • Teach ballet and other classes as required in alignment with the School’s System of Training and curriculum
  • Set classical and neo classical repertoire as required
  • Other duties assigned and consistent with the role

Qualifications & Key Competencies

  • Education requirement: university degree or college diploma or extensive equivalent experience with similar organizations
  • Experience requirement: at least 3 years of senior management experience in a professional ballet company or school; at least 5 years of experience as a Professional Teacher teaching in a professional ballet company or school; and several years of experience and strong specialization in Cecchetti or Vagonava ballet methods
  • Former Professional Dancer in a reputable Professional Company
  • Experience teaching both male and female students
  • Experience teaching a wide range of levels
  • Proactive and flexible approach to work, willing to be involved in all areas of the School’s dance initiatives
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to build good supportive relationships with students, colleagues and the wider dance community
  • First aid training or willing to attend training courses
  • Flexible attitude towards duties and working patterns in order to fulfill the requirements of the role
  • Empathy with a commitment to the aims and ethos of the School
  • Knowledge of repertoire from the classical ballets, as well as an ability to set classical repertoire
  • Strong knowledge of Office Equipment including a computer, scanner, email and outlook and Microsoft suite

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

  • This job is performed at the school in a variety of settings
    • Frequent sitting (working on a computer), frequent walking, standing, bending and reaching. Due to computer usage, there may be repetitive motions of the hands and wrists.
    • Teaching – standing for long periods of time, repetitive movements
    • Demonstrating Dance – adequate health conditions
  • The School of Alberta Ballet operates six days a week from Monday to Saturday. Public hours of operation are 7:30 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Friday, and 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturdays. Shortened office hours of 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM apply during school holidays and summer months.
  • As a performing arts organization and academic school, there will be projects and pursuits that may require time above and beyond the typical work schedule including evening and weekends for performances and recitals.
  • Employees are expected to comply with all safety regulations.

Salary / Wage

$80,862.60 per annum ($44.43 per hour based on 35 hours per work week); annual salary review available as per company policies

Terms of Employment

Permanent, salary employee, and full-time (35 hours per week) without overtime
