What will you do in this role?

We are seeking an Optical Designer to contribute to the development of our wavelength selective switch (WSS) products. WSS product development is inherently multidisciplinary, involving optics, LCOS, MEMS, hermetics, micro-optics assembly and electronics. WSS products are central to Lumentum’s Agile Optical Network product strategy and it is these products which handle a significant portion of the world’s voice and internet traffic. This is an opportunity to develop products that enable the continued explosive growth of the internet and become part of a world class development team.

  • Contribute to the creation of the optical designs for fiber optic and free space optical products, including the documentation of IP generated, and support of the patent process where applicable;
  • Conduct detailed analysis and simulation of optical performance and estimate the expected compliance to product specifications;
  • Participate in definition, execution, oversight and/or data analysis of experiments aimed at design optimization and design verification;
  • Provide support to manufacturing for troubleshooting;
  • Ownership of specifications for optical subcomponents in collaboration with suppliers and the associated Lumentum functional stakeholders;
  • Contribute to the broader Lumentum optical design community in sharing insights and developing best practices.

What experience will allow you the greatest success in this role?

  • Degree in optics, engineering physics, physics, or equivalent;
  • A deep understanding of fiber optics and optics principles including aberrations,
    polarization, Gaussian beam propagation, fiber coupling and diffraction;
  • Experience with ZEMAX optical modeling software and MATLAB
  • A practical understanding of optomechanics and methods of optical system assembly would be considered an asset;
  • A practical understanding of optics fabrication methods and capabilities would be
  • considered an asset;
  • Experience in optical modeling using ray tracing software, physical beam propagation software, and analytical methods, would be considered an asset;
  • Experience in the development of optical products would be considered an asset;
  • A passion for accurate, thorough and unambiguous modeling and specification of complex physical systems;
  • Data driven, energetic, self-motivated, accountable;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to adhere to tight deadlines.
